PSAT Information |
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test or PSAT is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test. The PSAT measures critical reading, math problem solving, and writing skills. Students take the PSAT to receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses, as practice for the SAT, and to receive information and applications from colleges. Scores from the PSAT are also used to enter students in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Approximately 1.5 million students enter the program each year, and the top 50,000 scores receive special recognition. Of those students, 8,200 receive National Merit Scholarships in the amount of $2500. Only PSAT scores from a student's junior year are eligible for scholarship consideration. Nashoba Valley Technical High School will administer the PSAT to all Grade 10 students and interested Grade 11 students on the morning of October 14, 2009. There is no cost to the student or the student's family. Juniors who would like to take the test should sign up in the Testing Coordinator's office. A limited number of practice test booklets are also available in the office of the Testing Coordinator. Please contact the Academic and Testing Coordinator's office if you have any questions regarding the PSAT or the National Merit Scholarship Competition, or you can go to their web site http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html .
