Music


 MUSIC APPRECIATION

This course is designed to give students a holistic look at music across cultures and decades. Students will study histories of music from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. Students will understand how culture and music connect to each other and our culture. The concepts of the physics of sound will be introduced. Students will also learn about music's effects on the body. Students will participate in individual and group activities to further their understanding of music.


CONCERT CHOIR

Anyone interested in studying vocal technique is invited to join the choir. Concert Choir is the primary chorus of Nashoba Valley Technical High School. Performances of varied repertoire include evening concerts, appearances for community organizations and choral festivals. Singers may also have opportunities to observe professional performances. After school rehearsals and night performances may be required.


CONCERT BAND

This ensemble is the primary performing band of Nashoba Valley Technical High School. Students are expected to have some previous experience on their instrument. The ensemble will perform a wide range of works from the modern concert band repertoire in a wide range of styles. Basic technical, ensemble and musicianship skills will be emphasized. After school rehearsals and night performances may be required.


MUSIC THEORY

This course is designed to fully delve into the theory and mechanics of music. Basic writing, listening, reading and tonal structures will be learned. Students will learn about writing their own music. They will study music engineering as well as progressively compose their own music throughout the year.




Extracurricular Music Opportunities


BEGINNING INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS

Any student who is interested in learning an instrument is eligible to participate in individual or small group music lessons. A wide variety of instruments are available for instruction. Students will gain an understanding of reading and performing music, as well as technical knowledge about their specific instrument. When students have reached a certain level of musicianship, they will be invited to learn together as an ensemble. Students may elect to stay after on any day whether they are taking music classes or not. Students may receive lessons in theory, instrumental, or vocal music.


PEP BAND

This is a fun elective group of those that play instruments. The purpose is to serve as a sense of pep and spirit to the sports teams. Students will play at select football and basketball games. The repertoire will consist of rock and popular tunes. Students will be required to stay after school for some rehearsals and games.
